These polypropylene bottles became discolored after being stored in a warehouse.
This micrograph of a microscopic sphere was taken with an FE-SEM at a magnification of 2000X.
This energy dispersive spectrum identified and quantified the elements present in the particle. It was identified as a silicate sphere rich in iron, aluminum and calcium.
The small “alien spaceship” in the center image is a common airborne contaminant particle. It is a component of incinerator fly ash which was causing discoloration on the surface of stored molded parts. All the non-combustible components get fused together in these mixed silicate spheres in the high temperature atmosphere of the incinerator.
